How to Ensure Your Pool is a Safe Place For Your Kids

Posted on

Having a pool in your own back garden is a huge luxury, particularly if you have children. But with luxury comes responsibility, and you will always want to ensure that your children can experience all the benefits of a regular swim and the fun of pool games without putting themselves in harm's way. These are some of the things that you can do to ensure that your pool is a safe place.

Pool fencing is key. When you have very young children, robust fencing is so important. First of all, the fence has to reach far enough to the ground so that even the tiniest child wouldn't be able to crawl underneath, and it has to be high enough so that it cannot be climbed over either. Glass pool fencing with toughened glass tends to be a good choice because it is extremely robust. It also means that if you have teenagers who want to swim without any hand-holding, you can still peek at them through the transparent glass and make sure they are using the pool in a sensible way. It might be a good idea to give the glass a slight tint just so that your kids can actually see the fence and won't run into it.

Install a non slip surface. It's a good idea to hang up a "no running" sign to make sure that your kids are in no doubt that they should take their time when navigating their way around the pool, but it's still sensible to install a non-slip surface around the pool as well. For this reason, ceramic and porcelain tiles are not the best choice. Travertine is a luxurious material that absorbs water almost instantly and this makes it a great non-slip option, but if you have a lower budget, you can opt for something like limestone or sandstone.

Keep floats and lifesaving equipment nearby. For very young children who are just learning to swim, having access to floats is, of course, very important. Make sure that you have an abundant amount of these to keep pool time both fun and safe. But as well as this, you should also have things like rescue buoys, a first aid kit, and rescue poles handy just in case of an emergency situation.

With these precautions in place, your pool will contribute to the life of you and your children in a hugely positive way.
