Understanding Pool Fencing Requirements

Posted on

In several lands, there are laws and regulations concerning children's access to swimming pools that are more than 30 centimetres deep both at home and in schools. Pool fencing requirements are made to save children's lives by limiting or controlling their access to swimming pools in case there is no adult accompanying the child. Pool fencing is a legal requirement that can attract a heavy fine for offenders or imprisonment for repeating offenders.

To avoid tragedies involving children drowning in pools, homeowners and school authorities are expected to comply with the following pool fencing guidelines:

Pool fence measurements

Your pool has to meet the required dimensions set by the local authorities to ensure the safety of young children especially those under five years of age. The measurements, if adhered to, prevent little children from squeezing themselves in-between the gaps of the fences. The height measurements have to make it unable for children to climb over the pool fence. These measurements can be applicable anywhere, but some authorities set the pool fence height at 1.2 meters from the ground level. Additionally, the gap under the fence shouldn't go beyond 10 centimetres. It should also be noted that gaps between vertical bars in the fence must not be more than 10 centimetres apart.

Gate closing and latching devices

The gate on your pool must always be kept shut and not always propped open. While opening the gate, its door must be swinging outwards, i.e., away from the pool. This is to ensure that little children do not by any chance force themselves into the pool. The gate door should able to shut automatically from any position without being forcefully closed. In addition, the pool's fence must be able to automatically lock itself when it is closed.

Maintaining the pool gate and fence

Since they play a big role in preventing unnoticed access to the pool by the children, the gates and fence must regularly be inspected and well maintained to boost their effectiveness. Proper maintenance helps in preventing faults that may develop to self-latching and self-closing gates. The maintenance measures include making certain that all of the fence's mechanical and operating tools are super tight and in good working condition. The pool owner has to confirm that any loose bolts or clasps are tightened or replaced by an expert fencing technician without any delay.

Much as you might think that it is a time and efforts consuming regulation, pool fencing is designed to save your child's life by restraining access to home or school swimming pool. Children do not have to swim or play alone in pools because they can drown. Therefore, pool fencing is a legal requirement that must be taken seriously for the safety and well being of the youngsters.
